Phase behavior of hard cylinders

چکیده
Using isobaric Monte Carlo simulations, we map out the entire phase diagram of a system hard cylindrical particles length (L) and diameter (D) using an improved algorithm to identify overlap condition between two cylinders. Both prolate L/D > 1 oblate < diagrams are reported with no solution continuity. In case, find intermediate nematic N smectic SmA phases in addition low density isotropic I high crystal X I–N-SmA I-SmA-X triple points. An apparent columnar C is shown be metastable, as case spherocylinders. stable cubatic (Cub), (N), (C) I–N-Cub, N-Cub-C, I-Cub-C Comparison previous numerical analytical studies discussed. The present study, accounting for explicit shape, paves way more sophisticated models important biological applications, such viruses nucleosomes.

Equilibrium phase behavior of polydisperse hard spheres.
We calculate the phase behavior of hard spheres with size polydispersity, using accurate free energies for the fluid and solid phases. Cloud and shadow curves are found exactly by the moment free energy method, but we also compute the complete phase diagram, taking full account of fractionation. In contrast to earlier, simplified treatments we find no point of equal concentration between fluid ...
متن کاملPhase behavior of polyampholytes from charged hard-sphere chain model.
A molecular thermodynamic theory is developed for polyampholytes from the coarse-grained charged hard-sphere chain model. The phase behavior of polyampholytes with variations in sequence and chain length is satisfactorily predicted by the theory, consistent with simulation results and experimental observations. At a fixed chain length, the phase envelope expands as the sequence of charge distri...
متن کاملPhase behavior of dipolar hard and soft spheres.
We study the phase behavior of hard and soft spheres with a fixed dipole moment using Monte Carlo simulations. The spheres interact via a pair potential that is a sum of a hard-core Yukawa (or screened-Coulomb) repulsion and a dipole-dipole interaction. The system can be used to model colloids in an external electric or magnetic field. Two cases are considered: (i) colloids without charge (or d...
متن کاملOn the phase behavior of hard aspherical particles.
We use numerical simulations to understand how random deviations from the ideal spherical shape affect the ability of hard particles to form fcc crystalline structures. Using a system of hard spheres as a reference, we determine the fluid-solid coexistence pressures of both shape-polydisperse and monodisperse systems of aspherical hard particles. We find that when particles are sufficiently iso...
